Do You Need a Car When Staying in a Miami Villa
It is one of the first questions guests ask when planning a villa stay: should we rent a car, or can we get by without one? Miami is not a one-size-fits-all city for getting around, so the honest answer depends almost entirely on where your villa is and how you like to travel. Here is how to decide.
You can get by without a car if your villa is in a walkable area like South Beach, Brickell, or the Design District, where rideshare and short walks cover most trips, but a car or a reliable rideshare plan is advisable for villas in residential neighborhoods, on the islands, or in waterfront enclaves, and the simplest option for many guests is to let the concierge arrange transport and a driver.
Miami is a car-first city, with walkable pockets
Start with the big picture. Miami is largely built around the car, and its public transit system, while useful downtown, does not blanket the city the way it does in New York or Chicago. The Metrorail and Metromover serve the downtown and Brickell core, and Metrobus runs more widely, but most visitors find transit inconvenient for a typical villa trip. What Miami does have is a handful of genuinely walkable neighborhoods and a deep supply of rideshare, which together cover most travelers without a rental car, depending on where they base themselves.
Where you can skip the car
In the walkable neighborhoods, a car is often more hassle than help, between traffic and the cost of parking. South Beach is the clearest example, compact, flat, and dense with restaurants, beach, and nightlife within walking distance. Brickell is similarly walkable, with dining and downtown at hand and the Metromover for short hops. The Design District and Midtown are walkable in their core and linked to Wynwood by the free city trolley. If your villa or residence is in one of these areas and your plans stay mostly local, you can likely skip the rental and lean on walking plus the occasional rideshare.
Where you will want a car or a transport plan
The calculation flips for homes built around space and privacy. Villas in residential neighborhoods, on the Venetian or other islands, in Coral Gables, or in waterfront enclaves are quieter and more secluded by design, which also means fewer things within walking distance. For these, you will want either a rental car or a dependable rideshare-and-driver plan, especially if you intend to range across the city for dining and day trips. The good news is that distances are manageable, and a car and driver arranged in advance removes the friction entirely.

Rideshare, trolleys, and the train
A few options fill the gaps between a rental and your own two feet. Rideshare through Uber and Lyft is plentiful and reliable across Miami, and for many villa guests it replaces a rental car entirely. Several neighborhoods, including Wynwood, the Design District, Midtown, and Coconut Grove, are served by free city trolleys that loop through the area. And for trips beyond the city, the Brightline train connects Miami with Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando from its downtown station, a comfortable alternative to driving up the coast. Between them, these cover a surprising amount of ground without a car in the driveway.
The parking and traffic reality
Two things make a car less appealing than it first seems, even for drivers. Parking in the busiest areas, South Beach above all, is limited and expensive, and many villas and residences offer only a set number of spaces, so a large group arriving in separate cars can run into trouble. Traffic is the other factor. Miami’s causeways and main arteries clog at rush hour and during event weeks, and what looks like a short hop on a map can take far longer in practice. For a villa in a walkable area, this is a strong argument for leaving the car behind. For a more remote home, it is an argument for a driver who knows the routes rather than fighting the traffic and the parking yourself.
It also depends on the season
Timing nudges the decision too. During Miami’s busiest stretches, high season from roughly December through April and marquee event weeks like Art Basel, Formula 1, and spring break, traffic and parking are at their worst and rideshare prices surge with demand. In those windows, a pre-arranged car and driver often works out smoother and more predictable than either a rental you have to park or a rideshare you have to wait for. In the quieter months, getting around is easier all round, and a casual mix of walking and rideshare covers most trips comfortably.
Getting from the airport to your villa
However you plan to get around during the stay, the first trip is from the airport. Miami International and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood are the two gateways, and from either a private transfer is the smoothest way to reach your villa with luggage and a group in tow. Rideshare works too, though a pre-arranged car means no wait and no surge pricing after a long flight. Our concierge arranges airport transfers as a standard part of a stay, so arrival is handled from the moment you land.
What about day trips?
One factor can tip the decision on its own: whether you plan to leave the city. Miami is a superb base for day trips, the Everglades to the west, the Florida Keys to the south, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach up the coast, and most of these are far easier with a car than without. If your itinerary includes a few excursions, that alone can justify a rental or a hired driver for part of the stay, even if your villa is in a walkable area where you would not otherwise need one. Many guests split the difference, going car-free in the city and arranging a driver for the day they head out of town. Our team can set up either, depending on where you want to go.
Let the concierge handle the driving
For many guests, the best answer to the car question is to not think about it at all. LRMB has been hosting guests across Miami since 2007, founded by hoteliers Tony Rajeh and Kristine Hall and grown into a curated collection of more than 90 private residences, guided by a 24/7 concierge and guest relations team. The team can arrange a car and driver for the length of your stay, individual transfers, or a car rental if you would rather drive yourself, and can advise which makes sense for your specific villa and plans. If you are still choosing where to stay, our guide to Miami’s villa neighborhoods notes how walkable each area is. Every home is prepared to an exacting standard backed by a 200-point housekeeping inspection, part of why the company is recognized as Miami’s Most Trusted Vacation Rentals Company.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need a car in Miami?
It depends where you stay. In walkable areas like South Beach, Brickell, and the Design District, you can usually manage with walking and rideshare. For villas in residential neighborhoods, on the islands, or in waterfront enclaves, a car or a reliable transport plan is advisable.
Is Miami walkable?
Parts of it are. South Beach, Brickell, the Design District, and Midtown have walkable cores, but Miami overall is a car-first city, so walkability depends heavily on the neighborhood your villa is in.
How do you get from the airport to a Miami villa?
A private transfer is the smoothest option, especially with luggage or a group, and can be arranged in advance so there is no wait. Rideshare also works. Our concierge arranges airport transfers as part of a stay.
Can the concierge arrange transport during my stay?
Yes. The team can arrange a car and driver for your whole stay, individual transfers, or a rental car if you prefer to drive, and can advise what suits your villa and itinerary.
Is Uber reliable in Miami?
Yes. Rideshare through Uber and Lyft is widely available and dependable across Miami, and for many villa guests it replaces the need for a rental car, though waits and pricing can rise during peak events.
Is parking a problem in Miami?
It can be, especially in South Beach, where parking is limited and expensive, and many villas offer only a set number of spaces. For large groups or busy areas, a driver or rideshare often beats parking several cars yourself.
